C’est en improvisant et en s’amusant que Robert Ouellet, artiste, Jean-Charles Pelchat, maquilleur, et moi -même, photographe, avons créé cette galerie de portraits en 1985. Si certains personnages sont inspirés de figures connues, d’autres sont purement fictifs, puisés à même l’imaginaire collectif. Avec l’utilisation du film noir et blanc et de décors sobres, c’est l’univers personnel de chaque regard qui donne vie à cette série. Robert a pu laisser libre cours à son talent inné d’interprète, abandonnant son ego afin que puisse surgir de l’intérieur chacun des personnages. Quant à Jean-Charles, il a pris plaisir à expérimenter toutes les nuances d’un même visage en le métamorphosant grâce à la magie du maquillage. De mon côté j’ai tenté de capter l’instant décisif où se manifeste le caractère particulier de chacune de nos compostions afin que perdure le plaisir de notre création.

It all started with having fun and improvising with my friends - Robert Ouellet, performer and Jean-Charles Pelchat, makeup artist. Together we created this portrait gallery in 1985. Some characters are inspired by well-known figures while others, totally fictitious, are drawn from the collective imagination. Through the use of black and white film and minimalist settings, the intimate universe of observation came to life as a wonderful series of photographs. Robert was able to unleash his innate talent as a performer, sublimating his own ego so that each character could emerge from his inner being. As for Jean-Charles, he took pleasure in portraying various facial expressions and endless transformations, which can be obtained through the magic of makeup. As for me, I tried to capture the decisive moment when the particular character of each of our compositions manifested itself so that the pleasure of our creation could be documented as it remained in the collective imagination.
